Until you come back
Twenty year old Kamenashi Kazuya stood in the streets of Shibuya amongst a busy crowd of people walking towards from all different directions. His cap tucked tightly upon his head and a huge pair of sunglasses covering a good part of his upper face, the boy looked up to the countless billboards and posters that surrounded him.
March 22. KAT-TUN DEBUT. Real Face.
This was it. It was finally the day. The day he had dreamed of from the moment he first entered Johnny’s Jimusho. Of course at that time it was a bit of an ‘iffy’ future for Kame for one couldn’t say he was the best looking boy at the try outs, but he did pass the tests with flying colors and earned a spot in the training room for Johnny’s juniors. Kame took it hard through all the rough training and to live up to everyone’s expectations, particularly his older seniors. He felt that he had to give in an extra 120% to fulfill his goals and become flawlessly perfect. And to think he’d continue to suffer from being back dancers for all the older seniors…not to mention being scolded by them constantly for minor mistakes…he had finally reached the top of his goal.
It’s been seven years of hard work. It has been seven years of long wait. It has been seven years that he and his group members watched as their fellow trainees were given the opportunity to debut while they watched in the sidelines with sadness and disappointment.
However it was finally Kame’s turn. He finally debuted. He did it. He did it alongside the five other boys he grew up with…learning so many different new things on the way. It was a rough journey but at the end…all the suffering…all the hard work…well, it was rather worth it.
But Kame was not happy. He just couldn’t feel happy. Even though he would always force a smile on television programs and performances…acting as if he was the happiest man on earth…beneath that happy mask…was a rather sad human being…
“KAMENASHI-SAN! KAMENASHI-SAN! KAMENASHI-SAN!”
Seventeen year old Kamenashi Kazuya continued to walk down the halls of Johnny’s Jimusho with a smirk on his face. He very well knew who that voice belonged to, but he continued to walk with pride, after all, the person would be showing up at his presence any second now…
“KA…ME…NA…SHI…SAN…!”
Kame could hear the person out of breath as the person took huge long breaths. Kame turned around with a smile as he waved at the person. “Oh, yo, Kusano!”
Fifteen year old Kusano Hironori took huge breaths as his chest heaved up and down. He looked at his favorite senior with sparkled filled eyes almost as if he had a burning secret waiting to be revealed.
The boy finally regained his breath as he started with a huge smile on his face. “I-I’M DEBUTING!”
Kame was rather stunned by the sudden news. He looked at his cell phone. Wasn’t it a bit too late for April fools?
But out of politeness, Kame laughed. “Hahaha Kusano, that wasn’t as good as your other jokes, but it was good enough to laugh at…”
Kusano frowned slightly. “B-But it’s not a joke! I’m really debuting!”
Kame frowned back slightly in return. It can’t be true, can it? Kusano Hironori debuting before Kamenashi Kazuya? That’s just absurd! Kusano only came here in year 2001, the kid was only around for two years and now they are thinking of allowing him to debut?
And on top of that…K.K.Kity? Kame really didn’t want to be arrogant, but didn’t KAT-TUN have a much bigger fan base than them? Kame didn’t understand. He did not understand at all. He knew he should be feeling happy for his junior, but he couldn’t help but overcome with slight anger.
“Mr. Johnny is letting K.K.Kity debut?” Kame asked rather uneasily.
“OH! No-no…” Kusano shook his head. “It’s really weird! He like took people out from other groups and just put them in a huge group together! Supposedly we’re supposed to represent the volleyball tournament taken place in Japan. OH! Kamenashi-san, I’m so excited! I’m going to be in the same group as Yamashita Tomohisa and Nishikido Ryo!”
Kame couldn’t help but wince inside. Yamapi and Ryo-chan too? Kame understood if the two of them were to debut…but Kusano? Wasn’t that a bit out of the blue?
Kusano’s smile turned into a small frown. “But…But I’m kind of sad…”
“Eh? Why are you sad?” Kame frowned. Wasn’t this kid being a bit too selfish? Kusano has been given the opportunity to debut yet he, Kamenashi Kazuya, wasn’t even considered such an opportunity. It was just unfair.
“I’m sad because if I were to debut…I would want to be in the same group as Kamenashi-san…”
Kame couldn’t help but give a small smile. He gave the younger boy a small pet on the head. “Me too Kusano…me too…”
However Kame was only referring to one thing with that agreement. Truthfully he didn’t really want to debut as the same group as Kusano nor did he really care who he’d debut with…considering the fact that currently he had not been getting along with the other KAT-TUN members…but he wished that he could debut. Because he truly felt that he was ready and that it was about time for him to shine…
Kame continued to walk down the busy streets as he walked by the record store. He couldn’t help but to notice the over plastered posters of KAT-TUN covering almost every inch of the store. He was somewhat flattered that such a store would promote them to such extent, but he couldn’t help but to noticed the new release section…
Securing the cap that was on his head, Kame took a step into the store as he walked towards the new CDs that were in line for the Oricon chart. It was no surprise that KAT-TUN would take the number one spot. After all considering that there were to be six different limited edition singles…it was no surprise that the sale rates would go so high. However Kame couldn’t help but to place his eyes on the number 3 slot.
March 16. NEWS. Sayaendou.
Kame slowly reached out as he picked up the newly wrapped CD. His eyes looked down on to the cover as he couldn’t help but feel his heart break for a few moments. It just wasn’t the same anymore.
Sure Kame had other things to worry about than the well being of another group. But he couldn’t help but feel pity yet he knew that pity would be the last thing Kusano Hironori would ever want from him…
“NEWS is suspended.”
Kame’s eyes widened as he had just answered his phone. The caller ID stated that the caller would be Yamapi as Kame predicted that his fellow co-worker would want to go out for dinner with him. However this was rather shocking news that Kame had least expected.
“What?” Kame’s hand clasped tightly around his cell phone. “Wait, what happened?”
“Ku-Kusano…”
“Eh? Kusano? What about Kusano?”
“Kusano was caught doing underage drinking…he denies he did it…and I believe him…I really do…but the top authorities decided to suspend the whole group and put us on some bullshit self reflection period…” Yamapi’s voice broke into small pieces as he tried to explain the situation to his friend. “Especially after the whole thing with Uchi…they think NEWS is consisted of problem kids…and how we aren’t worth to represent Japan…”
“That’s fucking bullshit! Don’t listen to that crap!” Kame defended. “Where are you? Do you need someone?”
“No…thanks anyway, but I’m fine. I think the person who is taking this the hardest is probably Kusano…he refuses to meet with any of us NEWS members…I think he’s blaming everything on himself…” Yamapi gave small sigh as an idea hit him. “Hey, but why don’t you go talk to him…?”
“What? Me?”
“Yeah. Maybe he’ll talk to you…after all; you are his favorite role model…aside from Usher that is…haha…”
Kame smiled. “I guess it’s worth a shot.”
Kame slowly placed the NEWS CD back on the rack as he adjusted his cap once more. He then hastily walked out of the CD store as he finally decided to ‘try again’. After Johnny announced the debut of KAT-TUN it was around the time that NEWS’s suspension was announced and Kame was just too busy with song recordings and the shootings of the promotional video. He didn’t really have the time to play as the comforting buddy; he was just too occupied with life and business. After all, his dream had finally come true! KAT-TUN was debuting! What could possibly be better than that?
However as happy as he should have been feeling…he wasn’t happy at all. KAT-TUN was at the brink of success as NEWS was tumbling to the bottom. How can he be happy when such horrible things were going on?
Kame finally arrived at the train station. He took out a couple of yen as he bought himself a ticket. He read the label on the ticket as he took a small breath. “Yokohama…”
Kame knocked on the door of the Kusano residence. He was surprised that there weren’t any news reporters lingering about anywhere, but it was probably because the harassing period was finally over.
“Who is it?”
“Ah, Good afternoon, it is Kamenashi.”
“Ah! Kamenashi-kun,” The door of the Kusano residence slowly opened revealing Kusano’s mom who was looking a bit weary. “Come in, come in.”
“Thank you,” Kame bowed respectfully as he took off his shoes and entered Kusano’s home. The environment was rather still and silent, almost as if the life had been sucked out of the home. It was rather different from his own home. Whenever Kame visited home, his house would just be so lively and loud that he would just get a headache by the end of the day.
“I assume you came here to see Hiro?” Kusano’s mother asked with a small smile on her face.
Kame replied with a nod. “How is he doing?”
“Well, for the first few days it was really hard because reporters were everywhere and we were trying so hard to prove Hiro’s innocence…but Mr. Johnny decided to suspend them…it’s horrible…reporters continued to come, but I finally had enough and called the police…”
“I would have done the same.” Kame nodded in agreement as Kusano’s mother led him to Kusano’s room.
She lightly tapped the door. “Hiro! Someone’s here to see you…”
“Didn’t I tell you not to let anyone in?”
Kame winced at the tone of the voice.
“But it’s one of your favorite people!”
“Who? Usher?”
Kame couldn’t help but give a small laugh.
“Well if you paint him black maybe he can be!” Kusano’s mother gave a small sigh. “It’s Kamenashi-kun.”
There was a long period of silence behind the door, as it finally slowly creaked open. Behind the door revealed Kusano’s rather disheveled hair as he had dark bags under his eyes. It seemed like someone wasn’t getting enough sleep…
“Yo.” Kame greeted with a small wave.
Kusano gave a small fake smile. “Hey.”
“I’ll go cut some fruit or something,” Kusano’s mother smiled as she left the room.
Kame invited himself into Kusano’s room. It wasn’t his first time in Kusano’s room. He had been invited over a couple of times, so it wasn’t a new experience for him or anything, but he couldn’t help but feel different.
Kame took a seat on a bean bag chair that was plopped in the center of Kusano’s room. He crossed his legs rather comfortable as he folded his hands on his lap, looking up into Kusano’s face rather intently. “Want to talk?”
Kusano plopped himself on his bed as he lied down on his stomach breathing rather heavily into his pillow. He then folded his arms across his pillow, resting his head on top, as his eyes met up with his favorite respected senior.
“Kamenashi-san…”
“Yes?”
“Can I tell you something?”
“That’s what I’m here for.”
“But after I tell you…would your opinion of me change?”
Kame frowned slightly. “What makes you say that?”
“Because…it’s so hard…so hard to impress the people you like when you do all these disgusting things to yourself…making yourself unlikable to others…”
“Well, it’s true that people’s impressions may change, but if they truly care about you, they would never leave your side.”
“Everyone hates me. But I don’t blame them. Tegoshi…Masuda…they were so excited…their new drama and them writing a song together…and then there’s Shige with his new drama offer…and Koyama too…Yamashita-san and Ryo always rising to the top like high rollers…” Kusano stared blankly at his wall. “But because of me. Because of me, I ruined everything. I ruined their futures.”
“Come on Kusano, you know that’s not true. Stop blaming everything on yourself. You know very well that they can never hate you…all you’re doing is scaring them…do you know how worried they all are of your well-being?”
“I drank it.”
“Huh?” Kame frowned.
“I drank the alcohol.”
“…” Kame didn’t know what to say.
“I knew I shouldn’t have drunk it. But I drank it anyway because I wanted to.” Kusano then slowly turned to Kame. “I’m disgusting aren’t I?”
Kame shook his head. “No, you’re not.”
“Yes! Yes I am!” Kusano then punched into his pillow. “But the thing that makes me so angry is how naïve and STUPID I am. Those girls tricked me. They tricked me…thinking that they really were my fans…fans sure can be scary…”
Kame bit his lip. He understood how scary fans were. After all he remembered hearing how a couple of KAT-TUN fans went to an Arashi concert, only to throw towels at them. It was rude and disgusting and Kame couldn’t help but feel ashamed that they were actually HIS fans. Then a thought hit him. Was it actually possible that a KAT-TUN fan would do such a thing to a NEWS member?
“You know…they only asked me to go karaoke…they told me how they thought I sung the best in NEWS and that they only wanted to hear me singing…hell, I didn’t know that alcohol was going to be involved…I didn’t know there was going to be some paparazzi man hidden in a corner…I didn’t know any of that shit!” Kusano began to sob into his pillow as the poor boy began to hate himself.
Kame couldn’t help but overcome with guilt. He couldn’t help but feel somewhat responsible for what has happened.
Yokohama.
Kame got off his train stop as he made his way towards that one destination. He walked rather quickly in order not to waste any time. Over the years he learned that time was actually very precious. There were so many things he wanted to accomplish in life yet there was so little time. Especially because of KAT-TUN’s late debut…they had so much to do to make up for the lost time.
Kame finally arrived at his destination as he rapidly knocked on the door. “Kusano! Kusano! It’s me, Kamenashi, open up!”
The door was hastily opened as Kusano opened it, looking at Kusano with a rather surprised and bewildered expression on his face.
“Kamenashi-san…uh, trust me, I’m really excited to see you, but this is kind of out of the blue!” Kusano’s surprised face turned into a small smile. “Plus, aren’t you a bit too busy to make time for your fellow junior?”
“Kusano, do you remember when you first debuted? And how you wish that I debuted with you?” Kame asked as he slowly regained his breath. Kusano nodded in response.
“Well your wish half came true.”
“You don’t know how happy I am for you,” Kusano smiled sincerely. Which made Kame feel slightly guilty considering the fact that Kame did once oppose of Kusano debuting. “It’s been a long wait, but you guys totally deserved it!”
“Thanks,” Kame smiled as he then hastily took out a piece of paper and pen. “But, I thought too, wouldn’t it be nice if I got to debut with Kusano as well?”
Kusano replied with a small sad smile.
“Would you like to write a song with me?”
Kusano’s face lifted in slight surprise and happiness. “A song?”
Kame nodded with a huge smile.
Tears of joy slowly filled up in Kusano’s eyes as he gave an abrupt nod. “It would be an honor and a privilege to write a song with Kamenashi-san.”
Kame grinned as he ruffled the younger boy’s hair. “Let’s get started, yes?”
“Yes sir!”
“And we can continue to write songs together and one day, when it’s time for you to come back, we’ll be able to perform them together.”
Kusano smiled as he nodded. He wished that there was something he could say in return but for some things, there were just no words good enough to describe such feelings.
